Andrew attended Lynfield College, Auckland, from 1977-1981. He gained a Horticultural Diploma from Massey University in 1983. In 2021 he completed a BFA (1st class Hons) from Canterbury University, and completed a MFA (with distinction) at the beginning of 2023, also at Canterbury University.

Work Life

Andrew worked in and around the horticultural industry from 1984 through to 1990. He then pivoted to becoming a house painter, where he gained his trade certificate as a qualified Painter/Decorator. He worked in this industry from 1990 - 1999, and again from 2011 - 2015. During his time as a house painter in 1994 he attended a course on decorative paint finishes, and it is here that he discovered a passion for artistic painting, as much of the course was based around artistic paint techniques.

After relocating from Auckland to Christchurch with his then young family, he worked full time as an artist, from 1999 through to 2010. Due to Earthquake related issues he spent a few years back house painting.

Then in 2015 he resumed full time art making. In 2017 he felt he needed to refine his visual language and create a strong personal style and extend his knowledge and skill base in art, so decided to go back to university and do a BFA beginning in 2018. Since completing a MFA in early 2023 he has dedicated himself to full time art making as a painter.
